When The Dot 3PL approached us for help they were seeking to improve in three main areas:
1. To create new labor efficiencies in their warehouses
2. To manage more bin locations
3. To improve inventory control and accurate cycle counts
The Dot 3PL is a fulfillment service which specializes in medical devices, e-commerce and products such as garments, hard-goods and electronics. Most of The Dot 3PL clients require same-day fulfillment, so it was critical that they achieve the service agreement goals which they promised their clients.
The DOT 3PL chose an Avectous WMS (Warehouse Management System) and OMS (Order Management System) because it was critical to seamlessly and transparently improve the “white glove” fulfillment processes their clients expect. After integrating Avectous software solutions into The Dot 3PL warehouse processes, there was a drastic improvement with inventory accuracy and order fulfillment. Adopting Avectous software finally helped The Dot 3PL achieve – and surpass – each of their goals.

My name is Jeff – I am the President of The Dot3 .
Our industry is fulfillment services, particularly for medical devices and e-commerce services or products like garment and electronics.
Q: What business problems are you solving with the product?
A: We’re using Avectous software to manage inventory in the warehouse. In particular, we are using it to create efficiencies in labor, and manage bin location. It helps us keep inventory accuracy at a very high percentage – much higher than before we deployed the software.
It also helps with the management of the service agreements that we have with clients. Most of them are same-day fulfillment and before we were utilizing the application we had a much more difficult time achieving those service agreements.Not so much now that we’ve applied it. Those are the main focuses of why we made the selection and the problems we are solving.
Q: What do you like best?
A: The feature that we really decided that we like the best was not what we would have expected when we made the selection. It’s actually the organization behind the software. So yes, the software is a very solid product, and it does everything we expected it to do. The great differentiator for this company (Avectous) is really the development staff and their approach to problem solving.
So what we’ve found is that our business – because we’re a 3PF (3rd party fulfilment) service, we constantly encounter unusual problems. There’s always going to be a client that will not fit in whatever box we have built – no matter how big we seem to make the box. And the team at Avectous has been spectacular at listening to these problems and finding ways to either modify their solution or be creative and show us a work-around that maybe another client of theirs has accomplished.

Q: What do you dislike?
A: Our least favorite attribute about the software is the web-based interface for specific users. Most of the users interact with the software at the hardware-based level, gun or a PC computer that’s out in the warehouse…and there is no issue there.
Where we have found an issue is on the executive side; a handful of executives in the business office prefer using Apple and the initial deployment of the software was based on a Silverlight.
So if you want to access Avectous software from something other than a warehouse RF gun or PC terminal – and if you wanted to use a Mac, you were pretty much out of luck because the best way to interface with the software is through Internet Explorer through a Silverlight application.

Q: What recommendations do you have for others who are considering Avectous?
A: The obvious key thing to be thinking about would be to look and really spend some time with the folks that you are investigating for the WMS or another application to operate your business. I think for us, one of the things that was really important was going on site and seeing applications both before the decision-making and then even after because we found that we could deploy software more effectively once we learned more about it. But I would say the most important thing is just making sure that you’ve engaged with the manufacturers and you personally have seen it used in the wild where it’s being deployed.
That gave us the opportunity to ask other Avectous clients questions. And we looked at a number of different software applications. I don’t know that we ever found anyone that was perfectly happy with their application… I don’t know if that person actually exists out there. But we found pretty significant frustrations with some of the other software applications we were looking at…and when we talked to the user base in facilities who were not using Avectous.
So I think the key is to get onsite, engage with people that actually use the software and get a sense of the problems that they’re solving with Avectous software.
